Duties:
- Greet patients and visitors as they enter the emergency department and help direct as needed:
- After the visitor checks through security, direct them to go to the registration desk
- Alert staff if the patient needs immediate attention
- Round on patients and visitors in waiting areas to ease anxiety:
- Offer blankets as needed
- Offer water to patients if the nurses give permission
- Sit with the patient if the family member/significant other needs to step away
- Answer their questions or find out the answers from staff
- Direct people to the vending machines, restrooms, Starbucks, Gift Shop and/or Cafe
- Offer a mask if requested
- Show folks where the phone charging stations are located
- Offer children coloring books and/or stuffed animal, crayons and puppets
- Help with a myriad of tasks that will leave patients and visitors with a positive feeling about Palomar UC San Diego Health
- Assist the Emergency Department staff
- Locate and sanitize wheelchairs for the emergency lobby as needed
- Take a visitor back to the patient’s room if staff requested/approve
- Sanitize the waiting room chairs
Qualifications:
- Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
- Possess the maturity, responsibility and interpersonal skills to interact cordially with patients, staff, volunteers and other customers. For example:
- Be aware when to have light conversation with patients and visitors
- Recognize when a comforting hand on their shoulder helps calm them and lets them know you care
- Use AIDET when rounding on the community
- Possess problem solving skills for their assigned area of responsibility and be able to handle stressful situations
- Maintain patient confidentially at all times

- Monday – Sunday: 12am-4am, 4am-8am, 8am-12pm, 12pm-4pm, 4pm-8pm, 8pm-12am
