When does Palomar UC San Diego Health hire nurse graduates or New-to-Specialty RNs?

Does Palomar UC San Diego Health hire nurse graduates directly into the ED, ICU, Labor & Delivery/Postpartum or OR?
Nurse graduate positions may be available in our ED, ICU, Labor and Delivery/Postpartum and OR programs. It will vary from cohort to cohort. Individual job requisitions will indicate if a specialty program is open to new graduate RNs.
Who can apply for the Nurse Residency position?
New graduate RNs who have graduated from an accredited nursing program within the past 12 months and have less than 6 months of experience working as an RN.
- Current employees must submit a Transfer Request.
- Palomar UC San Diego Health Pathmaker interns must complete an external job application.
Who can apply for a New-to-Specialty RN position?
RNs with 1 year of nursing experience.
- Current employees must submit a Transfer Request.
When is the best time to apply for a Nurse Residency or New-to-Specialty RN position and what is the process?
Positions are posted approximately 2.5 months prior to the start of the cohort. Positions may close externally based on applicant volume. You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible once the positions post. Nurse Resident posting dates will be listed on our Nurse Resident cohort information page: https://palomarucsdhealth.org/careers/nurse-residency/.
Can I apply for a Nurse Residency position before I get my RN license?
Yes. However, you must have your CA RN license by the program start date. If you do not have your CA RN license when we start accepting applications, you may still apply for the Nurse Resident position. If you have your NCLEX date, please indicate this on your resume and/or application (this is not required, but it is helpful for our leaders to know).
What is required to fill out the application?
- Interested persons must submit an employment application at https://palomarucsdhealth.org/careers. Click on “Job Search” to access our open positions.
- Positions will be titled “Nurse Resident” or “New to Specialty.”
- Complete an application for each Nurse Resident position/unit you are interested in.
- We highly encourage a resume to be uploaded.
- We require that you have a current CA RN license by the program start date.
Do you accept interim permits for newly graduated nurses?
No, we do not accept interim permits. Current CA RN licensure is required by the program start date.
How long is the commitment to the program?
The program is 1 year. Expect to stay on your unit, shift and department for the entirety of the program.
How long is the orientation period?
On average, up to 12 weeks. In specialty areas (ED, ICU, Labor & Delivery/Postpartum, OR), orientation time is extended.
How many hours per week will I be working?
All training program positions are full time, requiring 72 to 80 hours per pay period (2 weeks) for the length of the program, including weekends. There are no set schedules or self-scheduling.
How many days a week will I be working?
This is a hybrid program that includes online learning, didactic classroom training, hands-on skills and preceptorship. You may work 3-5 days a week, but no more than your full-time hours. You can expect to follow your preceptor’s schedule, which includes weekend shifts.
Will I be working any holidays during orientation?
During your time with a preceptor, you will not be working holidays. Once on your own, you will follow the unit’s holiday scheduling guidelines.
Will I be able to take PTO during the program?
Attendance is mandatory for all class sessions and precepting shifts. The expectation is that no PTO should be requested during the orientation period. Any PTO requests after that period will be per department guidelines. If you miss classes, there are no makeup days.
Which shifts do Nurse Residents and New-to-Specialty RNs work?
Both days and nights.
What other requirements are needed?
All positions require:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association.
Select units may require (Please refer to the job description for details):
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program – Advanced (NRP) from the American Heart Association.
Do you offer a sign-on bonus?
We do not offer any sign-on bonus for Nurse Resident positions at this time.
When will I know if I am selected for an interview?
If you are selected, you will be contacted (by phone or email) to set up an interview.
If you are selected for an interview, you will be asked to bring the following documents with you to the interview:
- Resume.
- 2 letters of recommendation (from school or someone involved in your nursing student career — must be on letterhead with signature).
