Since the 1980s, Palomar UC San Diego Health has recognized the need to partner with the community to help those who have been victims of violent crimes. The Forensic Health Services Department, consists of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and the Child Advocacy Center (CAC). This Department is located in San Marcos at One Safe Place Family Justice Center. Palomar UC San Diego Health Poway hosts a second SART location.
Programs at both locations are available 24-hours a day to provide medical services for children and adults who have experienced sexual and/or physical abuse. We work closely with local investigative and prosecutorial agencies to provide complete state of the art assessments that may be later used in court. Experts in the field of child abuse and sexual assault are maintained on staff to respond and also provide consultation and education to other professionals and to the community.
In 2022, Palomar UC San Diego Health became the designated hospital-based training center for forensic medical evidentiary exams in the state of California (CCFMTC).
Payment for Services
Patients will never receive a bill for Forensic Health Services. Law enforcement provides a fee for service though this does not compensate the full cost of the program. Forensic Health Services works closely with the Palomar UC San Diego Health Foundation and relies on grant funding, private and public funding partnerships committed to ensuring the availability of child abuse, sexual assault, and domestic violence services in San Diego.
